OLLAMA CLOUD, UNLEASHED

When capped

The exact monthly limit message, what it means on each plan, and how to see it coming.

The exact message

This is the monthly stop as our new-plan Pro test account received it, after it stopped at exactly $60.00 of cumulative usage.

you (<user>) have reached your monthly usage limit, upgrade for higher limits: https://ollama.com/upgrade or add usage credits: https://ollama.com/settings

The status is 429. Ollama’s error page also lists 429 as rate limit exceeded. Read the message: the monthly one names the limit and gives the two fixes.

Your options

  1. Wait for the reset. New plans reset on the subscription day of each month. Old plans reset the session at the next minute :55 boundary and the week on its seven-day cycle.
  2. Add usage credits. Included credits are used first, then purchased credits. The message links to the settings page for adding them.
  3. Switch to a cheaper model. Cheaper models covers per-token prices and the off-peak rows.
  4. Move batch work to off-peak. Only the DeepSeek models with off-peak rows get the lower prices, outside 12:00 to 18:00 UTC on weekdays and all weekend.
  5. Upgrade. The message links to the upgrade page for higher limits.

Monitor before you hit it

  • The 90% email. Paid plans get an email at 90% of the included monthly usage. You can turn it off, so check that it is still on.
  • The checker. Paste a key on the home page. A new-plan account sees exact monthly dollars and the reset date. An old-plan account sees estimated session and weekly windows.
  • The usage API, with spaced reads. Use the 24h range for pace and the 30d range for the month. Space reads 12 seconds apart. The limit is about five reads a minute, so eight seconds is too fast, and the usage API returns its own 429.

Do not work around it

Ollama allows one account per person. This manual does not cover multiple accounts or ways around a limit. When you are capped, the honest fixes are the ones above.

Check the real numbers

Paste an Ollama Cloud key on the home page. Exact monthly dollars on new plans, estimates on old ones, nothing stored.
